The guest bathroom is the smallest room in the house and the most looked at. Because it is small, every decision is visible, and because it is lightly used, it allows what a family bathroom does not. These are the decisions that matter, in the order you make them.

Start from the dimensions, not the photo
Most guest vanity problems start with a photo of a room two metres larger. Before anything else, measure the clear span between the walls and the depth of standing space in front of the vanity. Less than sixty centimetres of clearance feels tight no matter how good the design is.
A comfortable guest vanity top sits between eighty-five and ninety centimetres. With a vessel basin the top drops by the height of the basin itself, and skipping that adjustment is the most common error in vanities built from a picture.
Choosing the surface
Natural stone is more beautiful; quartz gives fewer problems. In a lightly used guest bathroom, a pale marble is a safer choice than it would be in a daily bathroom, provided the surface is sealed and acidic cleaners are kept away.
- Marble: the best veining, needs periodic sealing, stains from perfume and acidic soap.
- Granite: harder and less absorbent, with a less calm palette.
- Engineered quartz: consistent colour and high stain resistance, without the randomness of a natural vein.
- Solid surface: allows an integrated basin with no seam, easiest to clean and repairable when scratched.
Basin and tap
A vessel basin gives visual presence and needs a wall-mounted or extended tap. An undermount basin is quieter and easier to wipe because there is no rim collecting dirt. That decision comes before the top is fabricated, because the cut is entirely different.
A wall-mounted tap frees the surface and simplifies cleaning, but it has to be decided before plastering and first fix. Asking for it after the services are run means opening the wall again.
Mirror and lighting
Ceiling light alone casts shadows under the eyes and makes the room feel smaller. The best result comes from light on both sides of the mirror or a concealed strip behind it, at one colour temperature throughout. Mixing cool and warm white in a room this size is noticed immediately.
A mirror wider than the vanity opens the space visually; a framed mirror matched to the top gives a more disciplined look. Both are right. The only wrong answer is a mirror narrower than the basin.
